Oscar Awards

Consider the Academy Awards, less than a month ago Mark Kermode predicted that the Academy Awards were merely paving the way for the oscars, that their elimination process of sifting through the last years films would be perfectly mimicked in the upcoming Oscars; and whats actually happened I hear you wonder? Well, would you believe it? The three big winners of the Academy Awards: The Artist, The Iron Lady and Hugo have all been honored with shiny new oscars!

But let us not forget all the others they had tipped for greatness, The Iranian film

A short film from the 1947 classic 'Dreams that Money can Buy' a BFI production made by 7 surrealist artists. Even in the 40's the british film board was supporting minor movies created by expressionist surreal artists.

Film 4

Film4 contributes to the British film industry through a variety of means. For one, it hosts the only free film channel available on free view, opening up many aspects of the film industry for the folks at home. Major blockbusters are displayed beside cult classics and indie films, late night horror movies and foreign language films are given opportunity to be viewed by a mass audience, although even through the medium of television, non-blockbuster films are still marginalised beside major motion pictures.

Another important way that film 4 is contributing to the film industry is through the production of british film. It supports social realist movies as well as films with youth centric films, some of its productions have become mainstream movies on wide release such a slumdog millionaire and the kings speech, but it also makes movies like shame, and hunger and nil by mouth which deal with difficult and hard hitting issues relating to british society.

They have recently released 'The Iron Lady', and are anticipating the release of 'Shame' in britain later on this year. In 2011 they produced films such as; tyrannosaur, kill list, the inbetweners movie, one day, never let me go and 127 hours.

I think that in the current economic climate, its important to recognise the contribution of film to the current economy, British film brings in £4bn in revenue every year, if the money offered to it was increased then the money it was bringing us would be increased also. Its important to register the huge impact the british film industry has on the world and therein to support it, because who else will - if not the british themselves?
